Heraklion is the largest city on Crete and is in the middle of the northern coast. The city has a population of 131.000 inhabitants (census 2001). Heraklion is the fourth largest in Greece, and has the largest port in Crete, as the largest airport (Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport). The town is also the commercial and scientific center of Crete.
